Stand Up Paddle Boarding is one of the most rapidly growing sports internationally with a wide range of health benefits. It been proven that one hour of SUP’ing can burn 600-1000 calories of fat, enhancing your overall fitness levels and improving balance, coordination, endurance, blood flow and circulation. SUP’ing strengthens your heart and lungs while burning fat and toning muscles. It is of course the perfect way to unwind, de-stress and leave the worries of work behind.
It is suitable for people of all ages and ability as it requires minimal equipment – SUP board, paddle and buoyancy aid. We teach 10 years of age and above. Lessons can be booked individually or in a group and our instructors are all BSUPA / ASI certified and teach to the highest International standards. Their local knowledge and expertise can only but enhance your overall experience. So join us…fill your lungs with fresh sea air and explore the wonderful coastline and what nature has to offer.
This 2 hour class is held in Dun Laoghaire harbour, in an enclosed area for maximum safety and can be booked individually or as part of a group. During your introductory class you will learn all the basic SUP skills needed to become an independent Sup’er. i.e: handling your SUP board correctly,entering and exiting the water safely, basic paddling techniques, balance, coming to a stop turning and dismounting.
This 2 hour class would also be held in Dun Laoghaire harbour for the beginning of the session and then move out into more exposed waters in the harbour as the lesson progresses. During your water improvement class, you will learn more advanced strokes and refine your paddling skills, Improve on technique, learn backwards paddling, reading the weather and understanding the tides, identifying safe entry and exit points, self rescue.
This class is the final class to become an independent SUP’er as you will have gained knowledge on all conditions, favorable and unfavorable. The class would also be held in Dun Laoghaire harbour. This session includes knowing equipment terminology, advanced paddle strokes (J stroke C stroke and reverse J stroke) and techniques for exposed areas, board control in turbulent waters. Paddle Boarding is the perfect activity for families to enjoy together. It is an easy sport to take up, allowing both parents and children to interact and bond. Together you can explore the outdoors, getting close to nature, birds, seals and other wildlife and paddle around the moored sailing boats and trawlers. SUP is easier and safer than surfing, so everyone can relax and enjoy their time on the water. We provide all the wet suits, buoyancy aids and equipment needed for the session and guarantee an unforgettably fun experience!
We teach children from age 10 and above. During your 2.5 hour class, you will learn various paddle techniques and how to manoeuvre your board, starting, stopping, handling the board, safe entry and exit points. We provide toilet, changing room and car parking facilities at our clubhouse. Classes are taught by a qualified BSUPA instructor in the safe, controlled location of the Dun Laoghaire harbour. Our centre is fully insured and licensed to teach these classes. We recommend you bring along a towel, swimming togs, flip flops, sun cream and a bottle of water to the class.
At aboveboard we have a stand up paddle board club called Salthill sup club which offers members the use of the schools equipment 7 days a week for a massive discount.
We offer club membership to those who have completed the beginners class with us, giving them the opportunity to avail of our Club and its benefits – changing rooms, toilet and car parking facilities, equipment usage and insurance.
We charge an annual fee of €40 (this includes a free Sup Session) for the use of the club and these facilities.
Each launch thereafter is €20.
The club has increasing membership, making it a great social gathering of interesting people of all levels of paddle expirience and all keen to get out on the water and enjoy some quality SUP time with the group. Back at the club everyone gathers after their session, all the stories of the day can be handed around over a BBQ burgers and beverages.

Aboveboard offers a range of full and half day SUP excursions in Dublin and country wide, that can be organised with friends, family or colleagues. Our experienced SUP team are on hand to teach, set-up and co-ordinate all levels of participation. You will discover beautiful scenery and we will introduce you to some of the watery treasures of Ireland. SUP’ing on the canals is a great alternative way to see our beautiful countryside up close without having to use a car or a boat.
Kilcock to Leixlip – The Royal Canal
Kilcock is a charming village on the Royal canal, County Kildare. The Canal reopened in 2010, fully restored and rebuilt for recreational use. The beautiful canal is now an environmental treasure. This 13km SUP will see us meander alongside leafy embankments, the waterfall, aqueduct and ancient Roman bath at Leixlip. Your itinerary for the day would include your SUP equipment, class and instructor on the canal, your return coach journey and lunch.
Sallins to Hazelhatch – The Grand Canal
Sallins is a quaint village on the banks of the Grand Canal, County Kildare. This 13km journey we will take in historical ruins and stunning landscapes with a flourishing ecology, birds and other wildlife. Your itinerary for the day would include your SUP equipment, class and instructor on the canal, your return coach journey and lunch.
